Study: Staying active can offset obesity gene

November 2, 2011

A new study finds people with an obesity gene can reduce their odds of piling on the pounds by staying physically active.

A large international group of researchers say the so-called fat gene, which is known to increase the risk of obesity, has a 27 percent weaker effect on physically active adults.

Experts say you don't have to run a marathon or join a gym, but activities like walking the dog or cycling to work that amount to one hour of activity a day, five days a week will be effective.

The study appears in PLoS Medicine.
