Preparations included buying a new conveyor system that will allow them to get more salt into the storage domes so they will not run out as quickly.
There is now a "winter traffic patrol" in the collar counties to respond to hazardous conditions.
"Instead of calling someone from home to go out and take care of it, someone is available to patrol the area, take care of bridge decks, and respond to - whether it's the ISP or the local PDs to go out and salt our routes where there are icing complaints," said Carmen Iacullo of IDOT.
Officials also remind drivers to watch out for dangerous driving conditions and adjust their speed as needed.
