The Evanston city council has voted to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana. The vote was unanimous.

Current local law could result in a six-month jail term for possession of up to 10 grams of pot.

Under the ordinance, a ticket and a fine would be issued but no jail time.

A similar ordinance has been introduced in the Chicago city council but has not passed.
