Consumer products giant Unilever is reportedly planning to close its Melrose Park factory in 2013.

A union official said layoffs of at least 600 employees could begin in a few months.

A spokesperson for Unilever tells the Sun-Times the entire office staff will be cut or transferred.

Unilever said the decision comes after a review of the company's manufacturing network in order to achieve cost efficiencies.

The plant in Melrose Park has operated since 1961.
