Electronics may be a hot item on many holiday shopping lists. But a new survey says the rate Americans are returning electronics is on the rise.

The consulting firm Accenture estimates it will cost retailers and manufacturers close to $17 billion this year to process returned electronics. That includes costs for restocking, reboxing and reselling.

Accenture says 5 percent of the returns were because of defects. But the top reason most consumers returned electronics was because of buyer's remorse.
