Statistics show Americans are eating less beef

Beef may be losing popularity to leaner meats and vegetarian diets among more health-conscious consumers.

The statistics show beef consumption has dropped 25 percent since 1980.

Recently, high U.S. unemployment amid a financial recession may be keeping many cash-strapped Americans out of restaurants that offer beef on the menu.

The beef industry has countered by developing new, more affordable cuts of meat.
