Officers were responding to a domestic situation on the South Side in the 9500-block of South Avenue L.
Police say 24-year-old Karaka Walls was holding a relative hostage with a knife.
Police talked him into releasing the relative without harm, but investigators say Walls then charged at officers with the knife. That's when they opened fire, killing him.
No officers were hurt in the standoff.
