Family and friends are mourning a fallen soldier from Wheaton. Army Specialist Samuel Watts, 20, died Saturday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Maryland. He was being treated there since he was wounded last month in an explosion in Afghanistan.

A family friend says watts wanted to join the Army since he was in kindergarten.

"Once 9/11 happened he more or less was determined to not let that sort of thing cross our shores again," said John Gibbons, family friend. "He wanted to protect God, country and his family."

Watts earned several awards during his service including the Purple Heart. He was with the 82nd Airborne Division.
