A celebration today as a school converts a concrete desert into a lush garden.

Chicago first lady Amy Rule cut the ribbon to open the new garden at Evergreen Academy Elementary School on the South Side.

Students who helped plant the garden and created mosaics were also on hand.

An organization called Openlands is behind this project. Its program has installed 47 school gardens in Chicago since 2006.
