Elgin police responded to a reported shooting at 7:40 p.m. Thursday. Witnesses gave police a vehicle description and officers located the car a few minutes away.
Police said the vehicle had several people, including Nestor Alvarado, 16, of Elgin, who had a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Paramedics transported him to Saint Joseph's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
