Bridges stuck in heat, fire department comes to rescue

Sunday's heat caused problems for some of the downtown bridges crossing the Chicago River.

The Chicago Fire Department had to hose the bridges down to get them to close.

They had been raised to allow boat traffic to pass through but the sun's heat expanded the metal on the State, LaSalle, and Michgan Avenue bridges.

Water from the fire hoses cooled and contracted the metal so the bridges could close.
