Lake, McHenry counties in 'severe drought'

Lake and McHenry counties along with all of southern Wisconsin have been declared in severe drought, according to NOAA's drought monitoring division.

This includes all of southern Wisconsin and portions of northern Indiana.

The area needs roughly 6-12 inches of rainfall to alleviate the drought-- and it can't all fall at one time due to runoff.

The drought began in mid-May but has gotten much worse in the past month. The balance of the ABC 7 viewing area is in moderate drought but almost certainly teetering on severe drought status.
