Illinois now has a law protecting consumers from a practice known as cramming.

Governor Pat Quinn signed the legislation Wednesday.

Cramming occurs when third parties charge for unwanted or unneeded services on a landline phone bill.

Those services can include extended warranties or voicemail.

Consumers often don't know they're being charged.

The new law takes effect next year.
