Young children treated for cancer may be at higher risk for post traumatic stress disorder. The numbers could be as high as 1 in 5, according to a study in the journal Psycho-Oncology.

The study found some of the children with cancer were at higher risk for PTSD and many others had symptoms that included anxiety and flashbacks.

The children had undergone therapies that included, chemotherapy, radiation, surgery and bone marrow transplants.

Authors of the study say more care should be taken to ensure that stressful procedures are carried out as child-friendly and painless as possible.
