Alberto Mejia-Arellon is charged in the death of 20-year-old Francisco Avila-Castro. The victim was killed near the intersection of 33rd Street and North Geneva Lane in Zion October 10. Mejia was arrested Wednesday.
Mejia faces several felony charges. He is in jail on a $250,000 bond.
Zion police say Mejia is the owner of the 2004 burnt orange Toyota Scion XB that they believe struck and killed Avila-Castro, of Waukegan.Police announced Monday that Mejia may be hiding out in the vicinity of Waukegan/North Chicago. They also said Mejia's girlfriend has been obstructing the investigation. Text messages in the girlfriend's phone indicate she may be trying to repair the vehicle, police said.
