High voter turnout predicted in Duckworth, Walsh race

November 6, 2012 (GLEN ELLYN, Ill.)

"It was just a lot of mudslinging that turned me off to almost everybody," said David Rodriguez, Glendale Heights resident. "I had to pick one. I guess it was the lesser of two evils."

DuPage County includes portions of three competitive Congressional Districts. Among them is the 8th, where Democrat Tammy Duckworth hopes to unseat tea party favorite Joe Walsh.

"We stood up to some tough outside money. We were outspent 12 to 1. But we're going to win this one voter at a time," said Duckworth. "It's always going to be the same. As a country, we're broke and not working and we're sick of politicians who poll test every single word that comes out of their mouth. You won't get that with me," said Walsh.

Perhaps surprisingly, DuPage County's election commissioner says heated down-ballot races don't necessarily equal bigger turnout.

"It doesn't seem to peak interest. Really the driver of this election is the top of the ballot," said Robert Saar, DuPage County Election Commission.
