Study: Fasting cholesterol test may not be necessary

Most people schedule their cholesterol test in the morning because they've been told to fast. But a new study finds a fasting cholesterol test may not be necessary.

Scientists found the blood tests showed similar average total cholesterol and good HDL cholesterol readings regardless of whether patients had eaten recently or avoided food for more than eight hours.

Researchers say eliminating the fasting requirement would be more convenient for patients and for labs which often end up with long lines and wait times for early morning testing.

The study in the Archives of Internal Medicine suggests patients discuss non-fasting cholesterol test with their doctors.
