Demolition date set for St. James Church in Bronzeville

Demolition will begin on May 1 at St. James Church in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood.

A coalition of parishioners and preservationists has not been successful in its attempts to convince the Archdiocese of Chicago not to demolish the 137-year-old church. The archdiocese estimates renovating the church would cost around $12 million.

Instead of renovating St. James, archdiocese officials are building a new, $7 million church one block away on Michigan Avenue.
