Chicago police superintendent says gangs threaten to kill officers regularly

May 13, 2013 (CHICAGO)

McCarthy responded Monday morning to a report in the Chicago Sun-Times that says the Cook County Sheriff's Intelligence Unit intercepted a street gang's call for a hit squad to target law enforcement officers.

McCarthy says this is nothing new.

"I'm not gonna shrug it off," said McCarthy. "But the fact is, while it may hit the press once in a while, it's something that we deal with every single day...We take that stuff very, very seriously."

The Sun-Times report claims the sheriff's department alerted more than 130 police departments in Cook County as well as the Chicago Police Department and the FBI.
