Several hundred volunteers placed 26,000 American flags at the graves of the dead across the Chicago area on Monday.

One of the places they were honored was Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in far southwest suburban Elwood.

The Memorial Day holiday was started after the Civil War and was called Decoration Day.

The name wasn't officially changed to Memorial Day until 1967.
