Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett said Wednesday's budget approval reflects "difficult decisions" that had to be made to deal with a $1 billion budget gap.

The budget taps into nearly $700 million in reserves. The property tax levy will also be increased to the maximum amount allowed by law.

The budget includes $112 million in spending cuts.

Parents, students and community activists earlier Wednesday protested decisions CPS has made and demanded that board members be elected rather than appointed.
