Wrice's lawyers say he is a victim of police torture under the command of former Chicago Police Commander Jon Burge. They say his confession was false, and want the matter handled outside of Cook County because all current judges have ties to former Mayor Richard M. Daley and Appellate Court Judge Bertina Lampkin. Daley and Lampkin have both been subpoenaed to testify in Wrice's case.
In February 2012, the Illinois Supreme Court ruled Wrice should have a new evidentiary hearing.
Wrice is serving a 100-year prison sentence.
