Missing boater Lake Marie search a recovery mission in Antioch

September 18, 2013 (ANTIOCH, Ill.)

A man who was having some type of mechanical problem with his boat fell into the Lake Marie waters Tuesday.

Four boats and nearly two dozen divers searched the waters Tuesday night. Authorities said they did not believe the man was still alive.

Authorities say the man was with a number of people, reportedly family members, when he went in. Relatives were on the scene as crews conducted a grid search using two sonar devices in murky water that is about 20 feet deep, 300-400 yards from shore.

The fire department has not released the boater's name, but he is described as a man in his early 40's.

Friends and acquaintances in this tight-knit boating community came to offer help and support on Tuesday night, and many of them knew the missing man.

"He was very athletic, and I'm shocked that this happened to him. He was a very good swimmer, a skier, and a very good athlete and a really nice guy," said Cindy Court, friend of the victim.

The man's wife and children were among those on the scene all night.
