First American Vietnam War POW honored; Lieutenant Robert Goodman Jr. reunited with Reverend Jesse Jackson, who negotiated release in 1984

The Navy commander who became the first American prisoner of war after the Vietnam War was honored Saturday at Rainbow PUSH.

It was also a chance to reunite Lieutenant Robert Goodman Jr. with Reverend Jesse Jackson. Goodman and his partner were shot down in December 1983 as they were flying east of Beirut, Lebanon.

Goodman was taken prisoner by Syrian soldiers. His partner died. Rev. Jackson went to Syria and negotiated Goodman's release.

He and Jackson returned to the United States on January 4, 1984.
