Multi-state IRS scam targeting Aurora residents

February 15, 2014 (AURORA, Ill.)

Police say residents were contacted by callers who identifying themselves as government or employees of the Internal Revenue Service.

They tell victims they owe money or are required to pay fines.

Callers are directed to pay the penalties with Green Dot MoneyPak prepaid cards.

According to police, victims are threatened with arrest if they don't comply.

Aurora Police remind residents that the IRS does not operate by requiring restitution through Green Dot cards.
