James Degorski filed a federal lawsuit saying a guard at the Cook County Jail beat him in 2002, shortly after his arrest.
Degorski's attorney says it's unclear if his client will receive any of the $451,000 awarded to him.
Prison officials could seize it to cover part of the cost of keeping him behind bars.
Degorski and another man, Juan Luna, are serving life sentences for the murders.
