Hit-and-run driver strikes, kills man in West Town neighborhood

March 23, 2014 (CHICAGO)

Police say 33-year-old Shane Stokowski was walking across North Aberdeen just before 5 Saturday night, when he was hit.

He was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he died at 5:18 p.m., the medical examiner's office said. His home address was not immediately known.

An autopsy conducted Sunday ruled his death a homicide.

Police are searching for the driver of a black SUV.

Sunday night, witnesses tell ABC7 Eyewitness News that driver may have left a neighborhood bar moments before hitting Stokowski.

"The driver came from the direction of the bar, came down this way. Someone said he parked right out front of the bar and like headed this way," said witness Aaron Pendleton.

Stokowski worked as a graphic artist for Emmi Solutions in the Loop.

His landlord said Stokowski was engaged to be married.

No one is in custody as the Chicago Police Major Accidents Investigations Unit investigates.
