North Chicago's chief of police is stepping down because he can't meet the city's residency requirement.

James Jackson was appointed police chief in October 2012 but lives on Chicago's South Side.

The city requires certain employees to live within 18 miles of city limits and do so within 18 months of starting their job.

He's resigning effective May 1.
