Man on motorized scooter fatally shot 80-year-old in South Shore, source says

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A 67-year-old man was charged in the shooting death of an 80-year-old man in Chicago's South Shore neighborhood.

Police found the victim unresponsive outside a senior-housing building in the 2800-block of East 77th Place around 6:21 a.m. Monday. He had been shot in the face and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released his identity.

Ted Merchant, who lives on the same block where the shooting occurred, was arrested around 1:50 p.m. Monday in the 3100-block of East 77th Place. Police said he shot the elderly man after they got into a fight.

A police source said Merchant fired one shot, then when the elderly man collapsed, Merchant drove closer in his motorized scooter and fired more shots. Merchant, who sources said can walk with the assistance of a cane, then got into a car and drove away.

Merchant was charged with first-degree murder. He is due in Bond Court Wednesday.
