The study found the extra risk of death on birthdays rises as we age and is strongest for cardiovascular causes such as heart attacks and strokes.
Men appear to also have an increased risk of suicides and accidents, especially falls.
The reason? Experts say birthdays can be stressful, especially for elderly people, and that stress could help trigger heart attacks and strokes.
