Chicago's central library, the Harold Washington Library, is getting a multi-million dollar makeover.

Lighting, heating systems, cooling towers and malfunctioning generators will all be replaced.

A big portion of the old building's roof will be replaced in an effort to maintain it for the 100 years it was designed to last, a library commissioner said.

The building's facade will also be renovated.

The project is expected to be completed next year and will cost $6 million.
