Firefighters battle cold, blazes

The arctic blast is making it tough on emergency crews dealing with fires. Ice and flooding blocked firefighters from reaching a burning home in far southwest suburban Wilmington. Emergency crews had to use boats to reach the fire. No one was seriously hurt.

A garage fire on the city's West Side became more of a challenge because of the deep freeze. Extra crews were called out to this fire on West Taylor and Francisco Friday morning.

In far northwest suburban Woodstock, firefighters battled a house fire for more than six hours. The home is destroyed but no one was hurt.
