Former State Senator dies of natural causes

Former state senator and political trailblazer Adeline Geo-Karis has died.

She became the first woman in Illinois history to serve in the senate leadership. Geo-Karis also served as a Lake County prosecutor and Mayor of Zion. She spent 34 years in the General Assembly. Her political career ended after she lost a primary challenge in 2006.

The Zion Republican died of natural causes at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview. She was 89 years old.
