Adult cereals are best for children

If you want your children to have the healthiest breakfast cereal, a new report says to stick with the brands aimed at adults.

According to an analysis of 161 brands, breakfast cereals heavily marketed to children have the worst nutritional quality. The study by Yale researchers also found the health claims made for kids' cereals were often misleading. Cereals sold as low fat or low sugar were usually not lower in calories as parents might assume.

The report in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association also finds sugar accounted for more than one-third the weight of children cereals compared to adult cereals with about one-fourth.
