Weak economy may increase poverty

The state of Illinois announced a benefit increase Friday to help more than 26,000 families who are in need. It's the first benefit increase in six years.

"We know in these economic times, that an increase of this magnitude is really going to be welcome for families and it's going to make a difference for families," Dr. Carol Adams Illinois Department of Human Services.

Representative Elga Jeffries of the 26th district says she fought to increase benefits by 15 percent. But due to the budget crunch the increase is nine percent.
