The freezing temperatures may have played a role a series of crashes Monday that shut down part of the Elgin-O'Hare expressway for two hours in the morning. At least 12 cars were involved in the accidents. They piled up in the eastbound lanes between Lake Street and Gary Avenue near Hanover Park.

State police report there was salt on the road, but the extreme cold can limit the salt's effectiveness.

Three people suffered minor injuries.
