All three major indexes are on track to suffer their worst declines in decades. So far, the Dow Jones industrial average lost about 36% --that would be its worst annual decline since 1931.

The NASDAQ is down more than 42% since last year, its worst performance ever.

And so far this year, the broader S&P 500 has lost more 40%. If the index closes out the year that low, that would be the worst performance since it was created in 1957.

So here's to a better year 2009! There's certainly lots of room for improvement.
