Diabetics count on their glucose monitors to manage their diabetes. Now, the federal government wants to take a closer look at these devices because of concerns they're not always reliable.

The FDA is holding a two-day meeting to review blood glucose meters. It gets about 12,000 reports of errors with such meters each year and is currently weighing new industry guidelines.

Some in the clinical and patient communities have challenged the FDA to require tighter performance standards.

The devices have been around for more than 30 years and use small blood samples to check sugar levels.
