The organization CeaseFire plans to hold 13 "Stop the Violence" marches Friday night in Chicago and six elsewhere.

Chicago congressman Danny Davis is supporting the effort.

"The purpose of people gathering this evening is to promote a higher level of awareness around the issue of violence and how you prevent it," Davis said.

CeaseFire Illinois says the events will take place at 6 p.m. Friday.

They are held in the month of March because homicides and shootings increase during this month each year.
