Studies: Traffic accidents down as gas prices soar

As gas prices go up, traffic accidents seem to go down, even those caused by drunken driving.

Two studies - one in the Journal of Safety Research and the other in Accident Analysis and Prevention - looked at car accidents in Mississippi and tracked gas prices during a four year period. The results suggest that prices have both short term and intermediate term effects on reducing crashes.

Investigators also found a strong link between higher costs at the pump and a drop in frequency of drunken driving crashes.
