Report: Metra to crack down on free riders

Metra is reportedly deploying observers on its trains to make sure conductors are collecting fares and tickets from every passenger.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, Metra fears that hundreds, if not thousands, of people are getting away with free rides each year. The crackdown comes as Metra faces a budget crunch and considers whether to raise fares.

The Sun-Times says Metra has seen an increase in the number of complaints about free riders. Metra managers say conductors caught giving freebies could face discipline.
