An Elgin teenager whose mother was convicted of using her car to run down and kill his rival will go on trial this summer.

LaCorbek Benion is charged with first degree murder in connection with the November 2009 death of John Keyes III. A June 4 trial date has been set for Benion. His mother, Timera Branch, was sentenced to 34 years in prison last fall.

Prosecutors say Benion used a bat to strike Keyes as he lay on the ground.

If convicted, Benion faces 20 to 60 years in prison.
