High winds fanned a small grass fire until it became a big wildfire in northwest suburban Palatine over the weekend.

The flames ignited Saturday afternoon in the Grove Forest Preserve near Lake Cook and Rand Road.

Fire departments responded and made a line of protection for nearby homes and businesses. Hours later, the fire was extinguished fully at approximately 10 p.m.

According to fire officials, a tossed cigarette started the blaze.

No homes or businesses were damaged, and no one was hurt.
