Studies offer clues about genetic factors linked to autism

Scientists have for the first time honed in on several gene mutations which they say sharply increase the chances that a child will develop autism.

The research also provides further evidence that the risk increases with the age of the parents, particularly when the father is over 35.

The three studies are posted online in the journal Nature.

According to government estimates released last week, one in 88 children has a form of autism.
