After Smith refused to step down, a group of West Side Democratic ward committeemen led by Secretary of State Jesse White said they planned to slate a candidate under a third party banner to challenge Smith.
Just before the primary, Smith was arrested for allegedly taking a $7,000 bribe from an FBI informant.
