Study: 40 million addicted to cigarettes, alcohol or drugs

Forty million Americans are addicted to cigarettes, alcohol or drugs, according to Columbia University researchers.

Those numbers represent about 16 percent of the US population ages 12 and older.

The study also found another 80 million people are "risky" substance users, users defined as using substances in a way that threatens health and safety.

The study also found treatment is hard to come by because "addiction" is disconnected from mainstream medicine.
