The first new drug in four decades to fight tuberculosis has been given the green light to be sold in the United States.

The Food and Drug Administration says it has approved a Johnson & Johnson tuberculosis drug called Sirturo.

It's for use with other older drugs to fight hard-to-treat tuberculosis, which mainly involves the lungs.

Roughly one-third of the world's population is estimated to be infected with the bacteria causing tuberculosis, which can be deadly.
