The commission looking into public school closings and consolidations in Chicago is recommending that high schools be left alone.

In an interim report released on Thursday, the commission also suggested that the highest performing level-one schools be left as they are.

The report says children should not have to travel through dangerous territory simply to get to and from school.

The commission was appointed by Chicago Public Schools Chief Barbara Byrd-Bennett.
