It will take place on the tracks used by the Brown and Purple Lines between Armitage and the Merchandise Mart.
Most of the work will be done late at night and on weekends.
The CTA says it will not affect rush hour service.
Nearly 40,000 commuters ride the two lines into downtown each weekday.
