Patricia Degorski testified that her son and other children were all abused by her ex-husband. She told jurors that James often attempted to protect his siblings from the abuse.
Degorski and his friend Juan Luna were both convicted of murdering seven people at the Palatine restaurant.
Luna is currently serving a life sentence.
Closing arguments in the sentencing phase could begin Tuesday.
